Power Point Presentation Plan

Part One: Background (opening based on persuasive paragraph and reflection question about your issues in general)

Slide : Why is this issue a global one? What is the main problem?
Hunger kills more than 20,000 people every day, meaning that for every three and a half seconds, a precious life is lost. And every one of these people are somebody's son or daughter. But really, are these deaths necessary? These deaths could hace been easily prevented, with just less than a dollor(US) a day, a whole family in Uganda could have survived with food and clean water for a day.

80%of Uganda's population is involved with agriculture; however, 37% of them still lives in poverty. Uganda has enough food to feed its people but due to the lack of transportation, food accessibility is a bif problem for them. Most Uganda farmers travel on bicycles and most placesdo not have roads which makes delivering harvest products to the people even harder. Farmers also believe that satisfying their own family needs is more important than making a profit. Also, with limited technology they have, Ugandan farmers do not have access to pesticides and uses only the traditional ways of farming, therefore many harvests are lost each year due to pests.

Slide : How is this issue affecting the world?
Poverty doesnt only occur in developing and under developed countries. People suffer from poverty all around the world, even in developed countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, lowering the countries standard of living. These poverties also results in brain drain and decreases in productivity and countries are actually losing money because of these preventable deaths.

Slide _: What is being done to stop, prevent or fix this issue ?
International aid: 22 developed countries have currently pledged to work on donating 0.7% of their country's annual incometo reduce poverty. 5 countries - Norway, Sweden, Luxembourg, Denmark and the Netherlands have already achieved this goal while other other countries still to work on it.
Other than that, big organizations such as OXFAM and UNICEF held fund raisers to help with this issue. There are also campaigns where celebrities advertise for these organizations to raise awareness. Companies such as GAP, DELL, Apple and Armani have joined the organisation (RED) which would mean that they would donate profits from selling products in cooperation with (RED) to charity.

Part Two: Case Study (the specific area you choose to focus on)

Slide _ Images that help depict (show) your topic. (Write down the image description and what slide it is on- these should be throughout this section):

Slide _ : Background on your specific area; this should include specific statistics and quotes on your topic.

external image uganda_poor_people.jpg
This picture shows someone helping a poor child.

Slide _: Why did you choose this topic?
Food poverty causes the most deaths compared to other issues caused by poverty such as AIDS and HIV. Half of children in the world right now lives in poverty. Reducing food poverty is only the first step towards helping with other issues. Without food, people cannot survive, in order to have education and start earning a living, people need to be healthy. By providing these children with food, we are giving them a chance to live and turn things around for their family. We chose to work on Uganda because we want to start our work on a more specific and narrowed topic before going into a bigger area.

Slide _: What organization is working on this issue that you chose to focus on?
Through this project, we researched on the organization, Children of Uganda.

Slide _ : What exactly are they doing to try and combat or change the issue?
The organizations works on reducing poverty for the children in Uganda and providing them with medicines for AIDS and HIV, food, shelter, education, and clean water , and making life better for them

Slide _: What are some of the things you like about their program?
We like the fact that Children of Uganda have a narrowed topic which could be actually achieved with the help of other people, and also that they are attacking the problem on all aspects and not just one. They also support the sponsor a child system to take a step at a time to combat this issue. This program not only allows people to send money to the less priviledged kids but also enables people to interact with the children by writing letters.

Part Three: Interactive Activity
Interactive Activity- This should be related to your case study and involve audience members in order to educate them more on your topic. Describe your activity here and write down any questions you will ask the group. You should have the questions or directions on your power point.

Slide _ – Overall Idea
People will experience how the Ugandan survive each day in their little huts and be asked how they would live with the limited resources and technology they have

Slide
- Directions
We would want 6 volunteers to come into this marked area and make them answer questions on what they would do if they were in the same situation as those Ugandan children.

Before you proceed to Part Four, you must get your teacher to sign that your interactive activity plan is sufficient.

Part Four: Action Plan:
How do you plan to become involved with your organization or model your action plan after it? What do you propose to do? This should be either raising awareness
or doing something (signing a petition, donations, organizing a performance...).

Slide _ : What is your organization (name of your group)?
Our organization's name is EPU (Eliminate Poverty in Uganda).

What is the aim or purpose- Why are you doing this action?
Our ultimate goal is to reduce poverty in Uganda. The reason we are helping them is because we think that everyone is equal and it's not fair for some people to have cars, houses etc while some people starve to death. Our aim is to reduce food poverty in Uganda by supplying these children with food and money to give these children opportunities to get out of poverty. We would help support them and educate them so that they could learn to live on their own.

Slide : The message- Why should people be informed about this issue?
EPU would want to raise awareness to as many people as possible because we believe that as more people are aware of this issue, we could work together and reduce poverty in Uganda to save those less privileged children and give them a chance of life. We also believe that every small thing we do to help these people would grew to become big differences for them.

Slide _: What is a short-term plan for achieving your goal (keep it simple and don’t be too ambitious- again make sure you CAN actually do this)?

Through Children of Uganda, we would sponsor as many children as we can and ask for more people to join us and sponsor children around shanghai. We would hope to get permission from teh organization to represent them and support children through primary and secondary school.

Slide _ : What is a long-term plan for achieving your goal?
We would want to sponsor at least one child until he or she is of working age and check on the progress of his or her education and health. We would also keep raisng awareness to whereever we go to in the future.

Slide _: What information does your Wiki contain to let people know about this?
Our wiki contains more information about our organization and links to organzations that you could contact to help reduce poverty. We also have more information and statistics on poverty.

Why do people still live in hunger and starvation in Uganda?:
Even though 80% of Uganda's population are involved in agriculture, 37 % of its people still lives in poverty. Although Uganda has enough food to feed its citizens, their food accessibility and utilization are big issues. The main causes of Uganda’s food poverty are basically because of their lack of money and technology. Uganda's lack of money limits the expansion and output of their agriculture. Their farmers also feel that satisfying their own family needs is more important than making a profit, and very few wanted to invest in new technologies to prevent pests. Farmers in Uganda are scattered around the country in distant locations with limited money and technology. People have little access to transportations and roads, which means delivering products to other parts of the country is a problem. Without the introduction of pesticides, Ugandan farmers only uses the traditional methods of farming. Therefore, many harvests are lost each year because of pest diseases.

Statistics:
Uganda has a total debt of US$5 billion.
Every Ugandans have debts of about US$350.
Uganda had a civil war for more than 30 years.

Slide _ : Make a list of organizations/petitions that people can join to get involved in this issue.
There are many organizations that people can join
1. Free Rice which allows people to play word games and for each question they can, 10 grains are sent to the poor countries.
http://www.freerice.com
2. OXFAM which allows people to donate or sponsor kids.
http://www.oxfam.org/
3. UNICEF which also allows people to donate.

4. Children of Uganda

Slide
_: Reflect on how your action plan is going? What have you done already, how have you modified it and/or what is your time line?
We have finished sending a letter to an organization saying that we want to help, which is half of our short term plan. Currently, we are planning on going around Shanghai asking for donations which will be done soon. For our long-term plan. we have made our own organization called "EPU" which is part of our long-term plan.

Part Four: Conclusion
Slide _ : Why is this important? Why should you care about this and work towards solving this topic?
We are trying to help poor people because on their own, they cannot do anything. They have no resources and no food and eventually they will die. Even though there are organizations helping them, we still think that's not enough. We want to help as many people as we can. Like we mentioned before, we think that everyone is equal and everyone should get a chance of living a better life. That's one of our main reasons why we help and care for them.

Slide : Why should other people do something?
Other people should do something because when there are people dying because they have no food, it's just not fair for some people to go on holidays and have fun. Without other people's help, poverty will never reduce, it will keep growing and growing. We as the more priveleged people have the power to help the less fortunate and make our world a better place. We believe that every small thing we do can be big differences.

Slide _: Make sure to leave them thinking and inspired to do something themselves!
Millions of people are dying everyday, do you think it's fair?
